A core yarn provides traction during collection. Nanofibers gathered at the spiral collector are drawn together with the core yarn to form a continuous yarn.
Fiber collectors
Spiral collection for nanofiber yarns and three-dimensional fiber mats. Prepare yarn with or without a core, or build up layers of fibers into a thicker mat.

Scanning electron microscope images show the yarn and its surface at different magnifications. Enlarge each image to inspect the fibers and the original scale bar.

Enlarge image ↗The spiral collector can also be used to prepare three-dimensional fiber mats. Continued fiber deposition builds up successive layers, increasing the thickness of the collected mat.
The sample photographs show the collected mat from above and at the lifted edge, revealing the accumulated fiber layers.
